About Plants vs Zombies™ 2
Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a tower-defence style game from Electronic Arts in which you plant a defence of flowers, vegetables and other plants to stop zombies from reaching your house. The first game became famous for its humour and clever balance, and the sequel keeps that spirit while adding time travel. You visit different eras, such as ancient Egypt, a pirate seas world and the wild west, and each has its own zombies, hazards and special plants. The tone is silly and light, and the zombies are cartoon characters rather than frightening.
How the game works
Each level is played on a lawn made of rows. Zombies walk along the rows from the right, and you place plants on the left to attack them. Plants cost sun, a resource that falls from the sky and is produced by sunflowers. Different plants have different jobs. Peashooters fire at zombies, walnuts block them, and mines explode on contact. You need to balance your economy with your defence, and the right plant in the right row makes a big difference.
Plant Food and powers
Plant Food is a special item that you collect during a level. When you give it to a plant, that plant performs a powerful, temporary action. A peashooter may fire a burst of peas, and a sunflower may produce a large amount of sun. Using Plant Food at the right time can save a level. The game also provides finger-based powers, such as pinching or flicking zombies, which add a small action element.
Worlds, plants and events
Each world introduces new mechanics. In one era, you may have to deal with moving tombstones, while another has water lanes or minecarts. You unlock plants as you progress, and you can choose a selection before each level. An arena mode and seasonal events offer extra challenges. Some plants are available only through special offers or premium purchases, but many strong plants are free to earn.
Tips for success
Start with sun producers so that your economy grows before the zombies arrive. Place strong blockers in front of damage dealers. Study the preview of zombies before a level starts, and pick plants that counter them. Do not waste Plant Food on easy waves, and save it for tougher ones. Keep a balanced mix of offence, defence and economy. If you fail, replay the level and try a different set of plants.
Ads, purchases and requirements
The game is free to download and includes advertising and optional purchases for gems and premium plants. A connection may be needed for events and updates. Parents should check purchase settings.
Age suitability
There is mild cartoon combat in which plants defeat zombies, and there is no gore. Some younger children may find the zombies startling, so check the age rating.
Who it suits
It suits strategy fans, families and people who like humour. It is easy to learn but offers real depth.
How it compares
Compared with Kingdom Rush, it uses a lane layout and an economy of sun. Compared with Bloons TD 6, it has more variety in how plants work.
Our take
Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a funny, well-balanced strategy game.
