Why dress-up games are good for creativity

Dress-up games have no fail state, so they are a low-pressure way to experiment with colour, pattern and style. The skills you practise here, such as noticing what goes together, are the same ones used in real-world design.

Start with a colour family

Choose one main colour and one or two supporting colours. If the outfit is bright and bold, choose neutral accessories; if the outfit is neutral, you can afford a bright accent. Keeping to a small palette is the easiest way to make a look feel balanced.

Use pattern carefully

Patterns draw the eye. Use one patterned item per look and keep the rest plain. In a themed game, such as one inspired by African traditions, bold prints are part of the theme, so let them be the star and keep everything else simple.

Think about the whole picture

Look at the character from head to toe before you finish. Hair, makeup, clothing and accessories should feel like they belong together. Small changes, such as swapping a bracelet or a hairstyle, often improve a look more than changing the main outfit.

Try different styles each round

Challenge yourself to create a casual look, a formal look and something playful. The variety keeps the game interesting and shows you what you like.

Play with others

These games work well when two people take turns styling or when you compare finished looks. It turns a solo activity into a shared one.
