Special mention in Shivpuran

According to Shiva Purana, a Shiva devotee named Tadakasur, an Asura, pleased Lord Shiva with his penance. In return, Shiva gave him the desired boon, according to which no one could kill that demon except Shiva’s son. The age of that Shiva son should also be only six days. After getting this boon, Tadkasur created an outcry in the three worlds. Disturbed by this, all the gods and sages had prayed to Shiva to kill him. After his prayer was accepted, 6 days old Kartikeya was born from the white mountain pool. Kartikeya had killed him, but later he felt very embarrassed when he came to know that the demon was a devotee of Shiva.

Atonement temple of Kartikeya

When Kartikeya realized his embarrassment, he asked Lord Vishnu a way to atone. On this Lord Vishnu suggested him a solution to install a Shivling at the place where he would have to apologize daily.

In this way the Shivling was established at that place, which later came to be known as Stambeshwara Temple. This temple drowns in the sea every day and then comes back to apologize for its actions. A fair is held in Stambeshwar Mahadev on every Mahashivratri and Amavasya. One should set aside a full day’s time to visit this temple, so that this miracle can be seen.
